Morgan McDowell is the Host of Rocket Club Live, a popular gameshow for children ages 7 to 14 years-old. During his tenure as host, he has interviewed Founders of famous companies like Netflix, Beyond Meat, Birchbox, Warby Parker, and Casper to name a few.

McDowell is launching a podcast that focuses on the childhoods of some of his famous guests to get to the core of what happened during their earlier years that has made them so successful as adults.

Morgan knew he needed a catchy theme song for his podcast and enlisted the help of Lydian (age 11), a brilliant songwriter and member of Rocket Club Academy.

Below is an interview with Lydian to learn more about his recording process and inspiration to become a successful musician:

How did you get interested in music?

I got into music since I was a baby. Both my parents are full time professional musicians and they have told me I loved music when I was a baby. My mom told me that when I was a baby I always perked up when I heard the upright bass when my parents had jam sessions. I also remember one photo of me when I was a baby strumming a guitar.

How did you record your the theme song?

Well, first of all I had to create a riff which took a lot of time to come up with. When I started recording I tried to come up with a riff but I just couldn’t so I decided to take a break and all of a sudden it just came to me so I rushed to my room to record it. I easily added software drums so I could keep the beat and started recording the keyboard. After my draft Morgan recommended to change the structure to AABA and add cowbells so I added the b section and which I got inspiration from the structure of the blues and I added a cymbal on the off beat because I thought it sounded better. My dad told me I should add acoustic drums so he helped me set up different mics headed toward the drums so I could record that. I played the drums and took a few takes until I got the perfect one and then finally I was done! The software I used to record everything was Logic Pro and I used a Focusrite which allows me to connect my electric guitar and a mic to my computer. For the keyboard I used a MIDI keyboard which can plug directly into my computer and lets me record.

What type of music do you listen to and did that music inspire this theme song?

I love retro so stuff like the blues, soul, rock n roll, etc. These all inspired me in a way. The whole theme is more on the rock n roll and blues side. The blues inspired when I created the b section, because it was based off the structure of the blues. Most of the theme is rock and it just resonates with me.
